HHS Classes Council

An Interview with Bob Gersky, Hastings Alumni Association Director

So, Bob, how's the Classes Council Project going?

Extremely well! We're about done on the 1950s decade. The same is true for the 1960s . . . and we have about six classes underway in the 1970s. In addition to that, we now have a scattering of interested Class Representative volunteers from classes 1980 to the 2000s. Your article on the HHS CLASS COUNCIL in the last edition of the BUZZ was helpful and several other organizations, including the Hastings HISTORIAN have taken an interest in the project.

How many years of Class Representatives do you plan to include overall?

We decided to start with the year 1950, so we will have 57 years of continuity when we're completed. Bernie O'Brien, who retired from his official duties as Alumni Association director last year, was in that Class and has agreed to be a Representative from '50. Allison Long, who is to be a beneficiary of an HHS Alumni Association Scholarship from the Class of 2007, has agreed to be a CLASS REPRESENTATIVE at the youthful end of the time span. They are the Alpha and Omega. Ideally, as each class graduates they will select two representatives to the Alumni CLASS COUNCIL. On the other hand, if you graduated in the Class of 1950 you would be 75 years old today. Now we don't want to neglect our many former schoolmates who are older than 75 or were in classes from the 1940s and earlier -- quite the opposite!  As these classes begin to shrink by the attrition of time, there is a feeling we that should consider a "Senior Alumnus" category which would be supported by the Alumni Association, collectively, for reunion events and Homecoming festivities.

Who are you looking for that will make a good CLASS REPRESENTATIVE?

Good question.  Anyone who really appreciated their years at Hastings High School and has a special feeling for their old classmates will qualify. It's not just a matter of who was voted 'the most likely to succeed.

Often we find it's a person or persons who have spearheaded their class' reunions in the years since graduation that make the best volunteers. Putting on a great reunion is something like managing a huge wedding reception. It's a lot of work and there are plenty of different opinions to contend with. Also, reunion managers usually have the latest and best e-mail directory for their classmates.

We also want to have two representatives from each class, so that at least one can always get to the annual luncheon or dinner that can be expected to follow in the CLASS REPRESENTATIVE Program.  A number of people have told us that they think having both a woman and a man from their class would be a good idea. (Some actually said, "a girl and a boy"). Then there is the matter of geography.  If one person is living in Phoenix, Arizona, it's probably a good idea to have the second representative living within driving distance to Hastings.

Bob, how do Hastings alumni who want to get involved contact you?

They can call us at (925) 7365-9779 or email us at gersky@earthlink.net. They can fax us at (925) 736-1063. Remember to give us both a phone and an email address when you do. Sue and I will be away for the next two weeks celebrating a Golden Wedding anniversary in Hawaii. Not bad for two people who met in the 8th grade at HHS in 1947. I'm not sure when you go to press, Augie, but we'll be back by June 8, 2007.

Anything else important that we didn't cover?

Yes there is. If we have already spoken to any of your readers and they have agreed to serve as CLASS REPRESENTATIVES, they should not be concerned if they have not heard back from us for a while. We have elected to move forward with the momentum we are building. It has taken us only seven months to organize more than 25 years of CLASS REPRESENTATIVES and we want to keep it all moving.  A few people have emailed us indicating interest and then have not been available when we tried to reach them. Our message to them is, "Please reconnect with us."
