THE HHS CLASSES COUNCIL A Plan for the Alumni Association Community The "Yellow Jacket" book of 1926 referred to the existence of a HHS Alumni Association that pre-dated our current Association by almost half a century. It listed the names of scores of Association supporters, all the way back to 1908. Wow! The thought that a prior organization like ours had lived for a while and then died away for 'who knows what' reasons, struck us. Whatever it was, we knew we had to think hard about our future, and insure that our association, which has proven so effective in joining us to our treasured classmates at Hastings High, will survive. The Board of Directors enjoyed an excellent dinner together the night before the Saturday Board meeting at the Buffet de la Gare restaurant on Southside Avenue. It was, in fact, the first time we had done so. Much was discussed, but it was primarily about friendship and conviviality. With great good humor we were prepared to admit that many of us were becoming a rather 'senior' crowd, skewed heavily toward classes of the 1950s, although we were delighted with the addition of some talented new Directors that evening, from a much younger generation. This all is background to the assignment that evening of Director Bob Gersky, '53, to initiate a new Classes Council that will include two representatives from each class. It is anticipated that the Class Representatives will further organize themselves into decade--long groups--e.g. the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. As each decade of representative volunteers is completed, it is planned that they will meet to recommend new alumni programs and events, and to enjoy the experience of getting together again. It is hoped that the Classes Council will provide the 'bench' that we have long needed, to provide talented and motivated candidates for the Alumni Association Board of Directors. The Board, in turn, will stand ready to assist any Class planning a reunion. A Reunion Manual, Student Scholarships Awards and the availability of our tax-exempt 501(c)3 status can go a long way. So stay tuned--the 1950s decade group is almost in place, and we are moving on the 1960s. We are looking for both men and women who have worked on class reunions, or been class officers, or G.O. officers, team captains or just loved going to HHS and want to get involved! If you're interested, contact Bob or Sue (O'Brien) Gersky ('53) at gersky@earthlink.net or (925) 736-9779, Fax (925) 736-1063. |
