50th for the Class of 1957!

By Emily Marziale

All aboard! In March 2007, the Class of 1957 celebrated its 50th anniversary reunion cruising the Eastern Caribbean for one week aboard Celebrity's Millennium. Departing from Ft. Lauderdale, we enjoyed visits to the ports of Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; and Nassau, Bahamas. While on board we enjoyed various activities during the day, dinner as a group, and wonderful entertainment in the evening. A number of us often gathered at poolside to enjoy the sun, reminisce about HHS, and share photos of all our previous reunions. Since our first reunion, our 25th in Hastings, our class has had reunions every five years (and more recently, 2-plus years) and have held reunions in Marco Island, California and Puerto Rico (locations where classmates live). Our 40th was also celebrated locally.

Our cruise attendees were Carolyn (Leary) and Bill Bartholet, Peggy Ann Bliss, Anne (Cragan) Connerton, Tim and Rebeca Giles, Millie (Nunez) and Ernie Gonzalez, Helen (Howard) and Gary Harmon, Marianne (Hanifan) Hickey, Sr. Francine (Alverna) Kavanah, Andy and Georgianna Kerfut, Maggie (Kaufmann) Kosinski, Wayne and Sandi Landry, Nancy (Weisser) and Leo Marquez, Emily (Fernandez) and Sal Marziale, Margie May, Mike and Lynne Minozzi, Bill and Sherri Neely, Barbara (Jacobsen) Olson, David and Esther Pagan, Nan (Donnelly) Santini, Pat (Brennan) Scova, Stephanie (Merton) and Tom Tombrello, Sandy and Susan Towle, John and Susan Vaszko, Beck (Stewart) and Arthur Wharton, and our adopted classmate, former teacher and treasured friend, Ray Smith.

Andy Kerfut writes, "It's truly amazing how fifty years went by so fast and how quickly the HHS Class of 1957 and spouses were able to bond together on board the Celebrity Millennium….our class has made it a point of rekindling our friendships on a more frequent basis, now every two and a half years. Dear old Hastings High School is a special place for all of us." Maggie says "how good it is to get together with those we spent so many good years in HHS by getting together almost every 2-plus years. As we get older, these friendships seem to take on a greater importance in our life." Maggie has just begun working on our next reunion for some time in 2009 in Arizona.

Initially there were some misgivings and worries about a cruise. After the cruise, Tim Giles (in a humorous vein) described his "worry" list: "I would get a cruise sickness (actually at the entry to each dining facility, an attendant offered a hand-washing solution), the ship would malfunction, I would have a disabling arthritis attack, our luggage would be lost, I would get seasick, there would be a terrorist attack, I would be eaten by a whale. As a direct result of this high energy worrying, nothing at all went wrong."  Several of us shared some of Tim's initial concerns, but it turned out to be a wonderful week spent having fun, sharing memories and creating new ones!

The reunion committee -- Emily Marziale, Pat Scova, Wayne Landry and Bill Neely—had fun planning the cruise. Everyone agreed that this was a successful and memorable occasion.
